Celebrating Lil Hardin Armstrong

You may not have heard about Lil Hardin Armstrong, and that's too bad, because she was a huge force in the music world back in the 1920's, all the way through the 1960's. Her biggest claim to fame may be that she was married to Louis Armstrong, but much beyond that, she had a successful solo career as a composer, arranger, singer and pianist.

She was a prolific songwriter, writing tunes such as "Just For A Thrill" that was covered by many artists like Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin, and the jivey "Let's Get Happy Together" among others.

Lil was such a strong musical force -- fronting her own 'Dixielanders'; an all-girl band; and was Bandleader for a Big Band that recorded nationally over NBC radio network.

I think that it's time that talented women like Lil Hardin Armstrong are given the credit they deserve. She wasn't just Louis Armstrong's wife, she was instrumental in shaping his career, pushing him to the forefront, and having a brilliant career of her own, even though she is virtually unknown to most Americans.

I can only imagine how tough it must have been for her in such a male dominated field, and how she must have fought for respect as a musician, composer and arranger, and singer.

Lil Hardin Armstrong -- my hat's off to you. Thank you for your talent, perseverance and grace.
